Convertible crib
A crib built to convert into a toddler bed, daybed or full-size bed as your child grows past the infant stage.
A convertible crib is a standard crib frame engineered with extra hardware so it can be reconfigured later, typically into a toddler bed, then a daybed, and sometimes a full-size headboard and footboard. The core crib functions like any other while the baby is small: fixed slats, a snug mattress fit and a stationary side, since drop-side rails have not been sold for years.
The appeal is cost and continuity, one piece of furniture spans roughly infancy through the early school years instead of being replaced twice. When shopping, check what the conversion kit actually includes, some brands sell the crib and charge separately for the toddler-bed rail or full-size bed frame rails. Also confirm the mattress size stays the same through every stage, since a mismatched mattress reintroduces the gap hazard the crib was designed to avoid.
A common mistake is converting too early out of excitement rather than readiness, or skipping the manual and reusing hardware from memory. Converting the wrong way can leave gaps or an unstable rail. Keep the original instructions and hardware bag, and recheck that safe sleep guidance still applies at the toddler-bed stage, since a young toddler still needs a firm mattress and a clear sleep space.
