Video monitor
A camera paired with a screen or app that lets a parent see and hear the baby from another room.
A video monitor pairs a camera placed near the crib with a handheld screen, an app, or both, so a parent can check on the baby visually rather than relying on sound alone. Most current models add night vision, and many now include temperature readouts, two-way audio, or motion alerts layered on top of the video feed.
The choice between an app-based monitor and a dedicated handheld screen usually comes down to whether you want the feed on a private, monitor-only connection or you are comfortable with a Wi-Fi connected camera and its own security settings, like a strong password and up to date firmware. Range and connection reliability are common practical complaints, especially in larger homes or with older Wi-Fi routers, so it is worth checking a product's real-world range rather than the marketed range alone.
Placement is a detail that is easy to overlook, the camera and any of its cords or mounting straps need to be well out of the baby's reach, not clipped to the crib rail within grabbing distance. A monitor is a helpful tool for keeping an eye on the baby, but it is a supplement to safe sleep practices, not a substitute for them.
