# Best Crib Mattresses for Firm, Safe Infant Sleep (2026) Source: https://nurserysetupnest.com/best/crib-mattresses Updated: 2026-09-15 Publisher: Nursery Setup Nest. Our score is an editorial rating out of 10 (fit 35%, features 25%, build 20%, value 20%), not a customer rating. Method: https://nurserysetupnest.com/how-we-research#our-score A crib mattress is one of the most safety-critical nursery buys, and firmness comes first. Infants need a firm, flat surface that does not conform to the head, so look for a mattress rated firm for babies, a snug fit with no more than two-finger gaps around the edges, and a waterproof or easily wiped cover. GREENGUARD Gold or CertiPUR-US certifications signal lower emissions, and some dual-sided models offer a firmer infant side and a softer toddler side. Crib mattresses suit every crib and mini-crib setup, and a dual-stage option stretches value into the toddler years. A practical tip is to match the mattress precisely to your crib's dimensions, use only a fitted sheet with nothing else in the crib, and replace any mattress that is sagging, secondhand of unknown history, or no longer firm, since a proper firm fit is central to safe infant sleep. ## Picks ### 1.
